Chapter 50: After the Tsunami

After taking an All-Star break to welcome Payton, it's time to start blogging again.

We went to Long Beach this weekend to see what was left of the cabin after the big tsunami.

The tsunami caused mild concern and tsunami watches were called along the beaches. The largest 'wave' was to be no more than 6". As it turned out there was a clam tide and nice weather so there were lots of folks heading to the beaches in bulky clothing with shovels in hand. Local officials stood on the beaches and gave warnings of impending doom then retreated to safety and left the clammers to their fates. Apparently the clams were running for high ground too because it was a record clam catch.

Saturday was picture-perfect weather about 70 degrees so we walked out on the jetty and drove around doing the tourist thing. We walked quite a way out on the jetty (shown below) and the water was calm on both sides of the jetty, which is unusual.

As usual, Bob has to tear something up and this weekend the target was the bathroom window and floor. Saturday, Dips watched the bathroom window goings-on from the comfort of our bed and complained about the distruption to his nap.

Sunday Bob had the floor spread with adhesive when Dips decided to stroll through the bathroom. There is a footprint in the adhesive and glue tracks leading back out of the bathroom. Two of his toes are still stuck together but he won't let me help him. Considering Bob thinks it's stupid to take the cat to the cabin with us you can pretty well figure out for yourself how that conversation went.

After the glue incident, Dips retreated to the sofa where he could nap and supervise Bob's work on the bathroom floor. Don't you just hate it when your toes hang out of the blanket?

For my last birthday, Bob got me a police scanner so I could keep my finger on the pulse of the goings-on in Long Beach. The scanner turned out to be a lot more technologically evolved that I was and it has taken me this long to figure out how to use it. I finally got all the frequencies for the local police, fire, ambulance, State Patrol, hardware store, and local hotel programmed into the scanner and was happily eavesdropping on the citizens of Long Beach.

As a reward for all my hard work in getting my scanner to work, a couple of the locals (I know they are locals because I heard that on my scanner) staged a nice accident on the corner right outside our cabin. I sat on the bed watching the accident and listened as each public servant was introduced to the accident. Since it was the only thing happening in Long Beach on a Sunday night all the public service branches were nicely represented.
